The Order of St. Lazarus

The Order of St Lazarus is a medieval Christian chivalric order that originated in the 12th century. Its original purpose was to care for people suffering from leprosy and other contagious diseases, as these individuals were often ostracized and neglected by society. The order established hospitals and hospices throughout Europe and the Holy Land to provide medical care, as well as spiritual support and comfort.

The members of the Order of St Lazarus were known as Lazarites or Lazarists and were recognized by their distinctive black robes marked with a red cross. They took vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, and dedicated their lives to serving the sick and afflicted. As the order grew in size and influence, it also became involved in protecting Christian interests in the Holy Land and providing aid to pilgrims. Despite facing many challenges over the centuries, including political turmoil and outbreaks of disease, the Order of St Lazarus continued to uphold its mission of compassion and service throughout the medieval period.
